What's this?

I didn't get any pears from my pear tree this year. We've only had it for 2 years though. It doesn't look very well though. Some of the leaves look like this.
And underneath there is this really gross alien thing. Does anyone know what it is and any recommended tips for getting rid of it?

  1. Eeesh, that looks nasty !
You may have come up with the info already but I found this page that would ID it as Pear Trellis Rust. Seems there's no 'cure' and there are no registered fungicides here in Canada to treat the disease, but some ppl have kept it somewhat in check with Bordeaux mix. Getting rid of the infected areas and especially the alternate host (very often juniper) is recommended. More here.
    Good luck.

  2. Yes this looks to be the same thing judging by the pictures. Poor pear tree, it is only a baby. I will keep removing the leaves and see if it survives. The only other trees around are behind the house and I can't go lopping those down really, even if they are diseased. Thanks for the help.
